According to The Kings Fund, Covid-19 is the greatest challenge that the health and care system have faced in living memory, so it is essential that the lessons learned from this experience, either from the rapid progress made in digitization and transformation the provision of services, the extraordinary contributions of millions of employees and volunteers, or the deficiencies and inequalities that were highlighted become the platform for sustainable transformation that allows being prepared for health crises of this kind simultaneously allowing to return to the levels of time and care that were had before the pandemic or even exceeded.

That is why now, with the 2021-22 priority plan, to try and address the issue not from the analysis of what happened in the health sector, where care professionals responded with the highest dedication and outstanding skills, but from proactivity seeking the incentive for productivity and the development of constant improvements that are replicable to any hospital or NHS trust.

More than a year after the start of this pandemic and having treated more than 390K people with COVID-19 and 275K following their cancer treatments, the challenges to restore the previous levels of care are still present, being the surgical waiting lists the predominant indicator of the metric, for which 5 priority areas have been developed where efforts and investments will be focused.

That is why the government has agreed with an overall financial settlement for the NHS providing an additional £6.6bn + £1.5bn for Covid-19 Costs and £1.5bn funding has been allocated for elective recovery.

“Providers should maximise the use of and potential benefits of e-rostering, giving staff better control and visibility of their working patterns, supporting service improvements and the most effective deployment of staff. Providers are asked to show how they intend to meet the highest level of attainment as set out by our ‘meaningful use standards’ for e-job planning and e-rostering.” NHS 21/22 P&OPG
