• MYSPHERA and Schneider Electric unite their solutions to improve the hospital’s surgical activity, increasing performance by more than 12%.
• The solution also increases the energy efficiency of the surgical block by coordinating and improving the regulation and control of the operating theatres.

MYSPHERA, specializing in the optimization of healthcare processes through IoT solutions, and Schneider Electric, a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, have teamed up to combine the capabilities of both companies to increase the performance of the surgical block activity, minimizing downtime, as well as its energy efficiency.

The daily operations of a surgical unit require the presence of many professionals (nurses, doctors, porters, cleaning staff, etc.) in multiple activities, which are still often performed manually, which implies a wide margin for improvement in their times. In addition to this, the delay in being operated on has increased, on average, by between one and two months, which has led to longer waiting lists for patients.

Schneider Electric has integrated its solution for controlling operating theatre conditions (temperature, lighting, humidity, pressure, and electrical insulation level) with MYSPHERA’s OR 4.0 (ORvital) surgical block solution, allowing all operations to be simplified through optimal and automated management of the surgical process. It generates events, states, and tasks to automate coordination between all the people and teams involved. In this way, waiting times in the surgical block could be optimized by up to 12%, allowing 14-16% more operations to be performed.

Lower environmental footprint

The highest energy consumption in a hospital comes from the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems and the surgical block, which in particular requires very strict air conditioning and ventilation conditions that must be constantly maintained to ensure the safety of the ward environment and to avoid possible patient infections. The surgical block is the unit with the highest energy demand in a hospital, representing up to 20% of its energy expenditure. With the joint solution from MYSPHERA and Schneider Electric, potential energy savings in the surgical unit of up to 30% and a cost reduction of around 150,000 euros are expected in large frontline hospitals.

Advantages of the combined solution

Being able to combine the surgical agenda and infrastructure automatically allows to adapt the whole to the reality of the operating room at all times, increasing surgical performance and adjusting energy costs,” says Adolfo Barroso Orgaz, Digital Buildings and Segments Director at Schneider Electric.

In this sense, the new solution integrates the MYSPHERA software layer with Schneider Electric, connecting with the hospital’s IT skeleton and allowing it to switch to energy-saving mode, where possible. In addition to providing benefits such as real-time control of scheduling, operating theatre operations, and patient transfer management, the connection between MYSPHERA software and Schneider Electric offers the ability to automate tasks such as switching to the energy-saving mode for operating theatres when, for example, activity indicates that there are no more operations scheduled that day, or the spacing between them allows it. The solution enables improved performance and energy savings and enables an additional focus such as operational efficiency for medical and maintenance teams through automation.
